The very definition of "bad ass"
When reviewing the tumors of the female pelvis (the very epitome of simple and interesting, by the way.. or not), I couldn’t stop thinking about how my instructors had told me that benign mucinous cystadenomata were some of the biggest tumors, period.
How big do you ask?
Oh, only about 300 pounds
The thing that really gets me, though, is that not ONLY is her doctor, Dr. Katherine...
How I became a zombie
One of the changes my med school has come to enjoy with along with a buttload of other curriculum “improvements” is the whole idea of providing a good 5.5 days of study time before finals. The basic effect is making every medical student completely crazy in whatever way they tend to go crazy over a period of about 144 hours. Some options:
1. Once sleep deprived medical student, now...

It's been a long ride
I’m sure by now no one knows who I am, but what does it matter?
Yeah, I fell off the face of the earth when I started medical school — are you surprised? Engineering was exhausting. Applying for medical school was exhausting, but nothing comes close to the daily grind and sinking feeling of impending doom mixed with excitement and euphoria. Plus, I thought I didn’t need to...

This is what originally made me spit out my soda: “The ADA says sure the diabetic can eat sugar, just shoot up enough drugs. CRIMINAL really”
My immediate reaction was to tell my friend with juvenile diabetes he could just Stop Eating Sugar (tm), which would solve all of his diabetic problems!
And then there was this,...
Dr. Tiller’s murder has been causing untold frustration recently. The most obvious reason is, of course, the loss of one of the nfew clinics in the country that performs a necessary medical procedure. The other problem that I have is, as always, the way that people discuss abortion.
See, the thing is, late-term abortions strike me as being more acceptable than elective abortions, because...

Ginger Relieves Nausea in Chemo Patients →
Thank you, Captain Obvious, you’ve saved the day again!
I also like how they assume ginger is mostly in soda and cookies. Sad, sad, uninteresting food culture.
I had to read this line about four times
“How can women supposedly acting freely and powerfully keep turning up tales of vulnerability-repulsive sexual partners, pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, even rape?”
Source: Linda Hirshman
My first reaction is “Uh, because they’re HUMAN.”
I think the “repulsive sexual partners” is the first thing that gets to me. Mostly because despite being a...

I also don’t get why spicy mustard = Grey Poupon. One of the very few things in my fridge is Sweet & Nicely Hot mustard from the Mt. Horeb Mustard museum in Wisconsin. Seriously, guys, it doesn’t get more normal American Midwest than that.

Food Rules
In partial response to Michael Pollan Wants Your Food Rules.
1. Two fruits/day
2. Two servings of dairy/day (usually milk)
3. Only one piece of meat/day
4. No more than three eggs yolks/week
5. Never have more than two carbohydrates at any meal
6. Always have at least one serving of vegetables (or fruit, at breakfast).
7. If you want to eat something, just do it before it becomes an...
It’s not particularly surprising to me that Loco Roco 2 is the game that actually managed to shock me back into playing video games again. It is fun, it doesn’t punish you for anything, and it is a handheld (which I am more likely to enjoy than more involved games because I am so. damned. busy.)
Though, I was surprised, because the one thing I didn’t expect Loco Roco 2 to be...
Life is trying to cheer me up
Just when I figure I can’t make it out of this cabin fever/constant MCAT studying slump I am in (in which I feel like I should just quit school, transform from geek into hipster geek, get a bunch of tattoos, and start working in a coffee shop), I realize that:
1. Tonight I get to make a freaking bonsai tree on the cheap because student organizations are awesome.
2. A certain famous...

Odin is Dead
My computer, aged only two years, has officially kicked the can.
If I were to describe it in layman’s terms, I would say this is really just a red ring of death. The thing was doomed from the start. Or at least from about a year ago. It started overheating until I had to prop it up on higher and higher platforms and use more and more air to keep the thing cool.
The motherboard just...

WoW Nonsense
One of the things that results from an inability to communicate across factions is an amusing tendency to orchestrate strange trades that feel a lot like drug dealing on the forums:

There is really only one way to trade across factions, and that is through the neutral auction house which has a crazy high tax for selling...
Engineering is disturbing me
So I’ve been dealing with all of these interviews for internships next summer. Basically my situation is this: I really don’t like being poor. I like having enough money for a monthly video game, or to take my boyfriend out to dinner. Also, I realize that taking a year off of school before diving back in to go to medical school sounds like a really good way to get me back into the...

Friend: “So, in my bible study group we’ve been reading Mere Christianity. I was curious what you thought about his argument about objective morality since we all pretty much say the same thing.”
Me: “Ehrr..I haven’t read it since I was 14 and I have to go to Spanish. Can I get back to you on that one?”
So, I’ve thought about it. A lot. I mean, I...

Go ahead and dig through the background if you want, but I’ll give a short rundown, which is probably more biased than it should be:
Tekanji writes a post about how feminists have a tendency to use “ableist language” (read: “crazy”, “retard”, “lame”).

I love Wikipedia
You know you´re in a good place where the source for something like this: “When preparing to fight an adversary or to frighten one away, cats can emit long, articulated meows that can sound eerily like human speech. ”
is this:
Though in all seriousness, my (very old) kitty Bridget sounded just like this the day we brought tiny floofy Xena into the house (who is now giant sleek...

Weekends Occasionally Suck
So, I was planning on making my usual excursion to my boyfriend’s house, but I found I had way too much studying to do on Friday night to warrant going over there until Saturday morning.
At about 6:00 Saturday morning I woke up with a bunch of phlegm right at the back of my throat that I found myself coughing up for the next hour or so. I proceed to get ready to go anyway, but then decide...
Various and Sundry Updates
1. School: Is fucking hard. I got my first Probability homework back and not surprisingly did terribly. It was filled with Calculus. I love learning Spanish, but I feel like I am the only person in the class who does. How can you not love learning a new language? IT IS AMAZING.
2. Social Life: I have had the opportunity to hang out with the co-opers a lot more. I went to a silly girly...
Women, Men, Stupid
I should read Heroine Sheik’s Preview of Fallout 3 and feel mostly my normal righteous rage at the whole overt sexism nonsense, but I have had a scream welling up inside my chest after reading this:
“Fallout 3 is, yeah, just that. Bioshock achieved stunning visuals and environments by juxtaposing desolation and destruction with a campy, retro aesthetic in its posters, radio...
The Xbox Saga Continues
So, I turned on my 360 to check if there was a disc inside, and guess what I saw?
Yeah, three fucking red lights.
They told me specifically that my system was only covered for the three red lights issue (which is why they made me pay $50, even though it was their fault). I’m calling for a refund RIGHT NOW.
Edit: Game, set, and match. They gave me my $50 back.

Google Chrome
It turns out all my hyperventilating about Firefox 3.0 came at an advantageous time because Google Chrome beta just came out! I’ve only been using it for a few hours, but it seems to not crash every time I use Google Reader.
My only pet peeve is the program’s visual design. I’d really prefer that it seemed integrated with the rest of my Windows XP crap, but oh well.

Short Games
In my frustration at my 360, I figured I could use some righteous anger, so I started playing Heavenly Sword over again from the beginning.
I finished it at 5:30 this morning. Yeah, one sitting. It’s a lot easier the second time around.
Despite its shortness, I totally get what they are trying to do, but I doubt its effectiveness. It’s really nice to see a game with a fairly good...
Xbox 360 Coffin #3
This one is going to put me back $50. And it is completely from their incompetency.
Fuck you Microsoft.
Goddamn. I’ll think twice before buying another 360 game, because I know this shit is as unreliable as they come.
Edit: I should say it has already put me back $60, because it completely destroyed my new Tales of Vesperia disc.

21st Birthday
Drunk, kinda lonely. Thinking I might go play Tomb Raider (though I’m doubting I will be able to solve puzzles in this state). I hate how birthdays are this insane rollercoaster of feeling like you’re not so alone, and feeling like you have to prove yourself for being such a fucking loner.
So I don’t have many close friends? What’s so fucking wrong with that? I feel...

My Google Reader is telling me I have 522 more blog posts to read. Granted, this is better than the over 900 I had this morning, but I am too frightened to dive back into the blogging world, especially from the lazy comfort of my summer ennui.
